Way out on the edge of our solar system, within the icy shelf of the Oort Cloud, sits the dwarf planet Sedna. Her orbit is highly eccentric, which means it is highly elongated and takes Sedna on a long journey from the inner solar system to its farthest point. It takes Sedna around 11,400 years to complete one orbit around the sun, making it one of our solar system's most distant known objects. The planet’s icy home is a fitting setting for the mythical Inuit goddess, after whom she is named.
In Inuit mythology, Sedna is the goddess of the sea and the underworld. She is said to live at the bottom of the ocean and is depicted as a mermaid-like creature with a fishtail. The myth of Sedna varies among different Inuit tribes, with each tribe having its version of the story.
In one of the most popular versions, Sedna was a beautiful young woman tricked into marrying a bird man. She soon discovered the man's bird form and begged her father to take her home. But the bird man, angered by her betrayal, caused a storm that capsized the boat. Sedna clung to the side of the canoe, but her fingers froze and became stiff. In desperation, her father cut off her fingers, and they fell into the ocean, transforming into the creatures of the sea. More disturbingly, another variant of the story describes her father hacking off her fingers to save his own life. Common to most versions of her myth, as Sedna descends into the frozen depths, she transforms into a powerful goddess.
Sedna’s astrological meaning
So, what can we take from Sedna’s watery myth regarding her astrological meaning? Jennifer Gehl's interpretation of what Sedna's discovery means for humanity resonates with me and my personal experience.
Jennifer proposes that within her myth and astrological meaning, we find the themes of the Moon (emotional attachments), Pluto (death/rebirth/transformation) and Neptune (non-ordinary states of being). This gives Sedna a triple water energy of these three planets.
"It would seem then, that Sedna's return to our solar system facilitates this type of shamanic healing for the planet. By revealing those areas in need of transformation and rebirth, such as our relationship with water, primordial consciousness, and our history or ancestral roots, we can contribute to collective healing by doing our own “inner” work. The “Good Mother”/“Terrible Mother” becomes the “Great Shaman” whose own wounding at the hands of humanity may now receive healing as people learn to honour and respect all life on this planet."1
In my personal experience, any transits involving personal planets or angles to Sedna result in a shamanic type of journey of death (of the outworn attachments) and rebirth into a healthier state of being. While many astrologers also link Sedna to technology, particularly with her transit into Gemini, AI and machine learning, I don’t hold this view, as it's never sat comfortably with me. I cannot personally equate her energies, as I have experienced them (intense and shamanic) with man-made machines! Only time will tell.
Sedna moves into Gemini for a very long visit.
Embarking on her slow journey around the Sun, Sedna has been in Taurus since 1968. However, on the 27th of April 2024, she bid farewell to the earthy realms of Taurus and ventured into the airy domain of Gemini. This transition, lasting until 2065, heralds a new epoch for our collective transformation, a celestial event of profound significance.
When we delve into the deeper meaning of Gemini, we encounter not just mental perception but also how we feel, see, and hear. Gemini, a mutable sign, signifies change and adaptability. With Sedna now in Gemini, we are poised for a profound transformation journey in humanity's perception.
Getting personal
However, to truly grasp the implications of Sedna's transit into Gemini for us individually, we must consider the house Gemini represents in our natal chart. If you have any planets or angles in the first couple of degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries, Leo, Libra, or Aquarius, you are likely already sensing these shifts in these house areas.
